James Gunn is someone I have always admired; cutting his teeth in the business with Troma (Tomeo & Juliet), penning one of my favourite Dysfunctional Superhero movies (The Specials) AND one of the only remakes that I have truly enjoyed (The Dawn of the Dead) as well as Directing a highly entertaining love letter to classic 80's Sci-Horror Movies (Slither). When it was announced that he was writing and directing a new Superhero themed film I sat up took notice.

Now, James Gunn has truly outdone himself.

Super is an absolute masterpiece!

Not because of vast vistas of stylised cinemtography or for stunning, groundbreaking, state-of-the-art special effects..... but for creating a film with depth, substance, subtext and heart. A film about humanity, hubris and heroics. Plumbing the darkest recesses of a tortured psyche and exposing it to the brilliant light of truth and idealism.

Frank D'Arbo (Rainn Wilson) is just an average man. His only happiness in life comes from marrying Sarah (Liv Tyler) - a former stripper and junkie - and the time he pointed a police officer in the right direction of a fleeing robbery suspect. These brief memories of bliss that bolster his meager existence are shattered when Sarah falls off the wagon and leaves him for her menacingly affable and quite criminal boss, Jacques (Kevin Bacon) - a role he plays with delightful relish - and he loses all faith.

During a chance epiphany, Frank realizes his true calling is to be a superhero – the Crimson Bolt – and to fight against those committing any sort of crime or injustice whether it be drug dealing, underage rape or simply butting in-line at the movies.

Dark, macabre, disturbing and absolutly hilarious, James Gunn's Super brings us one of the most profound charactor studies in american film since Scocese's Taxi Driver or the work of John Cassavettes. The true brilliance of Gunn's screenplay comes through in the performance that it inspires. Rainn Wilson is stunningly great here, displaying subtle depths and never allowing the charactor to become a characature. Ellen Page - who's Libby plays the sidekick to Frank's Superhero - is always good when she has quality material to work with and Mr. Gunn has not let her down either. Page's Libby is the perfect yin to Frank's yang.

Unfairly lost in the recent spate of "Real-life Superhero" flicks (Kick-ass, Defendor, Special etc.) Super is a refreshingly multi-dimensional film that brings an astute honesty and humanity to a genre that is often dismissed as low-brow comedy.

In my humble opinion, SUPER is the best American film to be released in the last five years and it packs an unexpected emotional punch that belies it's seemingly "fan-boy" origins. A truly mature work that resonates deeply on many levels... seek this one out at all costs.

Rue Morgue is a Canadian magazine dedicated to covering "horror in culture and entertainment," taking its name from Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue."

The magazine is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was founded by its original Editor-In-Chief Rod Gudino in 1997 who handed the position off to Jovanka Vuckovic in December 2005. The magazine's current editor-in-chief, as of the December 2009 issue, is Dave Alexander. The well known Rue Morgue logo was created by the magazine's Art Director, Gary Pullin, and was first published on the cover of its seventh issue.

It achieved distribution in the United States in January 1999. By 2006 it closed a direct distribution deal for Europe. Rue Morgue' is also available in Australia, New Zealand and Asia by import. Though it also finds its way to Mexico and Brazil (and other parts of South America as well).

Rue Morgue covers horror in all media: films, books, websites, comic books, music, etc. Each issue includes feature stories, opinion columns, and numerous reviews.

Eyesore Cinema is very proud to present this hands-on opportunity for the local community to celebrate the rich history of this wonderful publication. After 19 months in business we have decided to amend our opening hours to more accurately reflect our customer's shopping and rental habits.

We will enact a new operating schedule starting April 1st (no joke!) as follows:

Monday - Wednesday: 3pm until 10pm
Thursday - Saturday: Noon until 11pm
Sunday: 1pm until 10pm

As always, we are here to serve our community, so we are interested in your opinion. Please make a comment below if you have anything constructive to say about these new hours. We will also be running a poll here on the blog, in the sidebar, so that you can weigh in there as well. At the end of April we will re-assess and, with your input, decide on permanent hours for the summer.

Rogers Loves Downloaders

The news has hit several websites such as DSLReports and Digital Home that Rogers plans on increasing the maximum overage fee that they charge when you go over you data cap (The amount of surfing that you’re entitled to when you do anything on the Internet measured in gigabytes) from $25 a month to $50 a month. Keep in mind that Rogers charges $5 per gigabyte when you go over your data cap, so that means that you’re only on the hook for a maximum of $50 instead of $25. That doesn’t sound too evil as long as you don’t go over your cap. Right? That’s not how it’s being viewed. Take this opinion on DSLReports:

While carriers often claim these billing models are about fairness to lighter users, you’ll note that Rogers lightest customers are offered a 500 kbps tier with a 2GB monthly cap for $26 (plus fees), and users are billed $5 per additional gigabyte. Should grandma simply choose to download one very large file, she faces a monthly bill that could potentially exceed $70 — for a 500 kbps connection! The entire Rogers model isn’t designed with fairness in mind, it’s designed to drive the customer base toward ever-more expensive product. It’s designed to get customers to pay more money for the same (or less) service.

So keep downloading everybody, Rogers needs a new pair of shoes!

Late Fee (Almost) Amnesty!

We are preparing our year end accounting and would like to clear up any outstanding late fees.

As an incentive to those of you that have been staying away because you're scared to come in and deal with your overdue fines we are offering to cut any overdue late fees down to one third of the original fee.

So... for example, a late fee of $30.00 would be only $10.00 and a late fee $10.00 would be only $3.33!

Be a sweety and come by and clear up your debts!

Any customer with an overdue late fee in excess of $30.00, outrageously overdue rentals or unpaid account balances will receive a phone call from us in the next couple of days.

Be advised that any excessive overdue late fees that are left unpaid after February 15th may be subject to further actions - such as having the account transferred to a collection agency. This is also true for any delinquent accounts with un-returned movies or overdue account balances.

Eyesore Cinema is loathe to engage in such practices - but business is business and we have always been more than generous about late fees and if we were nice enough to let you walk out of the store with $50.00 worth of product on account - please be kind enough to come in and pay it off!
